A few interesting points of Bhutan

*  It is illegal to buy cigarettes

*  Land of the Buddhist

*  Giant protective penises are painted on the walls (I will check this out)

*  Gross National Happiness instead of Gross National Product

Travel Planning:
Except for the guests of the government or Indian nationals all travelers have to prearrange their travel to Bhutan through a travel agent within or outside of Bhutan.  The cost per-day is also fixed.  All one has to do is to decide when to go and what to see or do.
Cost
The cost per-day is fixed by the government at US$200/day/person ( low season the cost is US$165/day/person) for a group of 3 persons or more.  This cost includes all accommodation, food, land transportation within Bhutan services of guide and porters and cultural programs.  This rate applies uniformly although not everybody gets the same quality treatment.  Cost such as liquors, personal items and laundry, upgrade to five star hotels or other luxurious activities  are extras.  However, if you stay longer than 10 days then a 10% discount will be applied to the 11th to 20th day and 20% discount on 21th day onwards.as determined by the day of travel is in high or low season.  A  US$40/day surcharge is applied for a group of 1 and US$30 for a group of 2.

If you get into a volunteer & project employees then you do not need to be bounded by the above cost.

What to bring with you?

1)  It can rain any time of the day, any day of the year so it is advisable that you bring with you rain gears that can be carried handily - small umbrella or rain  coat or a poncho.

2)  A pair of good hiking shoes and hiking sticks - leg braces is recommended.

3)  The sun is strong at this high altitude so bring a lot of sun screen, sunglasses, and lip balm and a good sun hat that covers the neck as well.

4)  Be prepared for power outage and in case you need some light in dark places or during the night, bring along a good head lamp or a flash light.  I recommend the high efficiency, high intensity LED light -  with at least 40 Lumins output.

5)  Do not forget your personal medications, should also include motion sickness medication if you have problems with winding roads.

6)  If you want to enjoy hot springs then you will need to have swimming wear.

7)  Do not forget your camera and charger or batteries.

8)  Warm clothing - a light down jacket is recommend in your day pack.
