How did our ancestor get there?
Following was the story my father told me. A few hundred years ago our ancestor came
from central China, a place called Nan Shown. I looked at the Chinese map but
did not find a place with this name. In any case, one of the concubine of the
local Emperor ran away with her lover. As a result, the emperor sent out
soldiers looking for them. Our ancestor and his wife had to run
away from that place. It was not clear to me if that woman was the concubine or
for what reason they had to run. They ran south. Sometime after they started,
they consulted a fortune teller to ask him what they should do. The fortune teller told them they should take along with
them a roaster. They should settle at wherever the roaster croaked the first
time. They continued their journey. They reached this little island in the
middle of the river feeding the Pearl River - China's third largest river. The
roaster croaked. They settled down in this island and called this island
"chicken crooked island". This name remains to this day.
They lived there ever after and we are their
offsprings.
What do you think? Do you think grandpa was pulling out
legs?
(If you are a detective you might say that they consulted
the fortune teller in the morning, bought a roaster and then ran. They ran all
night and in the morning the roaster croaked. They must have consulted the
fortune teller in a small town never this island)
